Royal Enclosure, Ascot Racecourse
Our client commissioned a scale model of his original design, which was entitled "The coming together of two societies".
The concept was created to evoke an image of the wide variety of people who had visited Ascot Racecourse over the years and comprised two sets of renovated steel gates and a collection of bronze statues, including the representation of the young Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.
The White gates were commissioned and designed by the Ascot Authority in the 1950’s and purchased by the client from a sale during the refurbishment of the Racecourse in 2004. They originally marked the entrance to the old Winner’s Enclosure.
The Black gates were purchased from the development of the Harland and Wolff yards in East London. The gates suffered bomb damage during the war and our client was keen to leave this as a feature.
Largely intact, the fine detail and scroll-work on both gates had areas of heavy rust and in some cases, items were missing completely. Numerous layers of paint were covering all surfaces, which meant that the first process was shot-blasting back to bare metal.
The fabrication was complete and all the replacement fine detail work was incorporated. The gates were complete and the sculptures were positioned. Powder coated finish was applied and the gates were unveiled during Royal Ascot week.
